U2 was formed in 1976 in Dublin, Ireland. The founding members include Paul Hewson aka Bono (vocals and guitar), Dave Evans aka The Edge (guitar, keyboard, and vocals), Adam Clayton (bass guitar), and Larry Mullen Jr. (drums and percussion). Their name changed several times throughout the band's early history. Names included "The Larry Mullen Band", "Feedback", and "The Hype". In 1978 the band began playing original material as "U2".

U2 has released 11 studio albums, the first in 1980 entitled Boy, and the most recent in 2004 entitled How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb. By the mid-1980s U2 had already released four albums and established an international following. They have sold 170 million albums worldwide. They have six #1 albums in the United States, and nine #1 albums in the UK. U2 has also won 22 Grammy awards.
